Actor detained following incident with driver
Kiefer Sutherland was taken into custody early Monday after police accused him of attacking and threatening a ride-share driver in Hollywood, authorities confirmed.
Details of the arrest
The Los Angeles Police Department stated that Sutherland, 59, entered the vehicle, physically assaulted the driver, and issued criminal threats around 12:15 a.m. local time (08:15 GMT). The driver sustained no injuries, according to LAPD.
Sutherland was released later the same day after posting $50,000 bail (approximately £37,000). His next court appearance is scheduled for February 2. Representatives for the actor have not responded to requests for comment.
Location and investigation
The altercation occurred at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. The LAPD's Hollywood Division is leading the investigation.
Background and prior incidents
Sutherland, best known for his roles as counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer in the television series 24 and as the U.S. president in Designated Survivor, is the son of veteran actor Donald Sutherland.
The British-Canadian performer has faced multiple arrests over the years. In 2007, he served 48 days in jail for driving under the influence and probation violations. Another assault charge from 2009 was later dismissed. His most recent arrest came in 2020 after he made an illegal U-turn in Hollywood.
