Shooting at Kentucky State University claims student's life
One student died and another remains in critical condition following a shooting at Kentucky State University (KSU) in Frankfort on Tuesday, officials confirmed. A suspect, who is not affiliated with the university, is in custody.
Campus lockdown and police response
KSU was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after authorities responded to reports of an "active aggressor" in a residence hall on the south side of campus. Frankfort Police Department stated the incident appeared isolated and did not meet the criteria for a mass shooting.
Frankfort Police, KSU campus police, and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office coordinated the response. Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy praised campus police for their "swift action," noting they detained the suspect before additional officers arrived.
Officials react to "senseless tragedy"
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear addressed the incident on X, condemning the violence and offering prayers for the affected families and students. "Thank you to our brave law enforcement who acted quickly to protect our people," he wrote.
KSU President Koffi C. Akakpo called the shooting a "senseless tragedy" during a press conference Tuesday evening. "As a parent, I cannot imagine receiving the call I placed today to the parents," he said.
University cancels classes, offers support
Out of respect for the students and their families, KSU will not release identifying or additional medical details at this time. The university has canceled classes, final exams, and campus activities for the remainder of the week, allowing students the option to return home.
Counseling and support services are being provided to students, faculty, and staff impacted by the incident. The university is maintaining close contact with the families and offering all available assistance.
Investigation underway
Local, state, and federal agencies are assisting in the investigation. The KSU campus spans approximately 1,000 acres and is home to over 2,200 students and 450 faculty and staff members, according to the university's website.
