Kazakh couple accused of A$1.2m casino fraud using hidden tech in Sydney

A Kazakh husband and wife allegedly used concealed cameras, earpieces, and phone-linked devices to defraud an upscale Sydney casino of nearly A$1.2 million (£593,000; $784,000), New South Wales Police confirmed on Friday.

Arrest and charges

Dilnoza Israilova, 36, and Alisherykhoja Israilov, 44, were detained after casino staff at Crown Sydney's Barangaroo location observed Israilova wearing a small camera hidden on her Mickey Mouse T-shirt, authorities said. A subsequent search revealed magnetized probes, a phone mirror attachment, and hidden earpieces allegedly used to manipulate card games.

The couple, who arrived in Sydney from Kazakhstan in October, applied for casino membership the same day. Over several weeks, they accumulated winnings totaling A$1,179,412.50 before staff flagged suspicious activity on Thursday.

Alleged scheme mechanics

Police allege the devices-connected to the couple's phones-captured real-time images of the gaming table. Earpieces provided external instructions on wagering timing, enabling them to exploit card games systematically. A New South Wales Police spokesperson told the BBC no additional suspects are being sought.

Evidence and court proceedings

During a search of their nearby accommodation, officers seized additional "gambling props," high-value jewelry, and €2,000 (£1,750; $2,320) in cash. Both appeared in court on Friday and were denied bail. Israilova's next hearing is set for February, while Israilov is scheduled to appear on 11 December, according to Guardian Australia.

The couple remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.
