Jury selection date announced

Federal court in Manhattan has scheduled jury selection to begin on 8 September in the trial of Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old accused of fatally shooting United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.

Trial timeline hinges on death penalty decision

Judge Margaret Garnett indicated that the start of the trial will depend on whether prosecutors secure the death penalty for Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to the killing. If the death penalty is approved, opening statements will commence on 11 January 2027. Without it, the trial will begin on 13 October, according to the judge.

Prosecution seeks capital punishment

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is pushing for the death penalty in the case. The court is currently reviewing the request, which will determine the trial's timeline.

Evidence dispute takes center stage

During a 90-minute hearing on Friday, the court focused on the legality of a backpack search conducted during Mangione's arrest at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Defense attorneys argue that the search was conducted without a warrant, making the evidence-including a notebook and a gun-inadmissible.

Prosecutors counter that Altoona police followed proper protocol during the search and that the items should be allowed as evidence.

Additional charges and dismissed allegations

Beyond federal murder charges, Mangione faces state-level second-degree murder, weapons, and forgery charges in New York. Earlier terrorism charges against him have been dismissed. No trial date has been set for the state case.

Defendant maintains innocence

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both federal and state murder charges. His legal team continues to challenge the admissibility of key evidence as the case progresses.
