Stones bids emotional farewell to Manchester City
England defender John Stones announced he will leave Manchester City this summer after eight years, calling his time at the club the fulfillment of every childhood dream. His contract expires at the end of the season.
A trophy-laden journey
Since arriving from Everton for £47.5 million in 2016, Stones has become one of City's most decorated players. He played 293 matches and helped the club secure six Premier League titles, the 2022-23 Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
In a heartfelt social media post, Stones reflected on his transformation from a young player to a father and husband during his decade at the Etihad. "I lived all my dreams out and lifted all the things that I came here to achieve," he said. "Every dream has been smashed out of the park."
Pep Guardiola's pivotal role
Stones, who was Pep Guardiola's second signing at City, credited the manager for his success. "I don't think it would have been anywhere near as successful without him," the 31-year-old said. "I'm so grateful for what he's done for me."
Guardiola, in turn, praised Stones' ability when fit, calling him a "top central defender." However, injuries have limited Stones' impact in recent seasons. This term, he has made only 16 appearances across all competitions, captaining the team in their FA Cup semifinal win over Southampton on Sunday.
Injuries and resilience
Stones' time at City has been marred by recurring muscular issues, including thigh and calf problems. According to Opta, he has missed 737 days and 295 matches due to injuries or selection decisions, with 32 separate absences over his decade at the club. This season, he has played just 353 minutes in the Premier League.
Despite the setbacks, Stones remains a fan favorite. His match-winning goal-line clearance against Liverpool in the 2018-19 title race and a crucial equalizer against Arsenal in 2024 are etched in City's history. Bernardo Silva hailed him as a "special player," noting the team performs better when Stones is fit.
Future prospects and England's Euro hopes
Stones' next destination remains uncertain, with reports linking him to Barcelona, his former club Everton, and Premier League newcomers Coventry. Barcelona are said to be willing to offer him a pay cut.
On the international stage, Stones has earned 87 caps for England and was called up for March's friendlies, though he withdrew due to a calf injury. Teammate Marc Guéhi, who joined City from Crystal Palace in January, praised Stones' influence, saying, "Playing with John makes my life so much easier."
England manager Thomas Tuchel views Stones as a vice-captain alongside Declan Rice, but his fitness will determine his inclusion in the Euro 2026 squad. BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel noted, "If he can prove his fitness in the coming weeks, he has a good chance of making the plane."
City's final push
With six games in 21 days, City aim to secure a domestic treble this season. Their campaign continues on Monday with a trip to Stones' former club Everton, marking the defender's first return to Goodison Park since his departure in 2016.
