Actor James Van Der Beek dies aged 48

The star of Dawson's Creek passed away peacefully on Thursday following a diagnosis of stage three bowel cancer in late 2023, his family announced.

Family statement and final days

"Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning," his family said in a statement posted on his social media accounts. "He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace."

Van Der Beek revealed his diagnosis publicly in November 2024, though he had been battling the disease since the second half of 2023.

Diagnosis and health struggle

In an interview with Business Insider, the actor described noticing changes in his bowel movements, a common symptom of colorectal cancer. After eliminating coffee from his diet without improvement, he underwent a screening test that confirmed stage three cancer, indicating the disease had spread to nearby lymph nodes.

The Cleveland Clinic explains that colorectal cancer originates from growths in the colon's inner lining and can metastasize if untreated. Men are statistically more likely to develop this form of cancer, though increased screenings have contributed to a decline in mortality rates.

Personal reflections on identity and treatment

Van Der Beek described his "lowest point" during treatment as a crisis of identity. "All these beautiful things that I love, and I used to define myself as-a father, a provider, a husband-all that got taken away, or at least paused," he said. "I had to sit there and say, 'Well, what am I?' And it was, 'I'm still worthy of love.'"

Following his diagnosis, he became an advocate for early screening, telling Business Insider, "If I can save anyone from having to go through this, that's magic."

Career highlights and recent work

Van Der Beek rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s, becoming one of television's most recognizable faces. His breakout role as Dawson Leery in Dawson's Creek (1998-2003) cemented his place in pop culture alongside co-stars Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams.

He also starred in the 1999 film Varsity Blues and later appeared in the cult series Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, playing a fictionalized version of himself. In 2021, he competed on the 28th season of Dancing with the Stars.

Despite his diagnosis, Van Der Beek continued working. Earlier this year, he guest-starred in the Prime Video comedy Overcompensating and made a surprise virtual appearance at a Dawson's Creek reunion charity event on September 22. Originally slated to attend in person, he withdrew due to two stomach viruses.

Tributes pour in from co-stars and fans

Condolences flooded social media following the announcement of his death. Dawson's Creek co-star Busy Philipps, who played Audrey Liddell, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing, "My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today... every person who knew James and loved him." She directed her 2.4 million followers to a fundraiser supporting his family with expenses.

"While James' legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world."

Jennifer Garner called his death a "heartbreaking loss" and extended love to his widow, Kimberly, and their six children. Director Olivia Munn and model Tess Holliday also offered prayers for the family.

The official Dawson's Creek social media accounts, in a joint post with Sony Pictures, honored Van Der Beek's impact: "His iconic portrayal of Dawson Leery helped define a generation of television for fans and continues to resonate with audiences today."

SAG-AFTRA, the union representing Hollywood actors, paid tribute to Van Der Beek, who joined in 1994, for "bringing sincerity, depth, and heart to his performances."
