Camorra fugitive captured after 15-month manhunt
Italian authorities detained Roberto Mazzarella, a high-ranking Camorra crime syndicate leader, at a seaside villa in Vietri sul Mare on Saturday. The 48-year-old had evaded arrest since January 2025 on murder charges.
Arrest details
Mazzarella was found inside a luxury residence with his wife and two children. Officials confirmed he offered no resistance during the operation. Carabinieri military police released video showing heavily armed officers storming the property.
Patrol boats were deployed offshore as part of the coordinated raid, which also uncovered three high-end watches, approximately €20,000 in cash, forged identification papers, and several mobile phones.
Background
Mazzarella ranks among Italy's most wanted fugitives and holds significant influence within the Naples-based Camorra. His clan has historically dominated counterfeiting operations, particularly banknote forgery.
Last month, police arrested 16 individuals allegedly connected to the Mazzarella organization on cyber fraud allegations. Authorities believe Mazzarella had been residing at the Amalfi Coast villa under an assumed identity.
Legal next steps
Mazzarella will face murder charges in addition to potential counts of forgery and organized crime association. Italian prosecutors are expected to request his transfer to a high-security detention facility pending trial.
