Lebanese health ministry reports 39 deaths in Israeli airstrikes
At least 39 people were killed in Lebanon on Sunday as Israeli forces conducted a series of airstrikes, according to the country's health ministry. The strikes targeted areas in southern Lebanon, where clashes with Hezbollah have intensified in recent weeks.
Strikes in Saksakiyeh and Nabatieh leave multiple casualties
An Israeli airstrike on the southern town of Saksakiyeh resulted in the deaths of seven people, including a child, the Lebanese health ministry confirmed. The ministry also reported that 15 others were wounded in the attack, among them three children.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated the strike targeted a structure used by Hezbollah for military operations. The IDF claimed it took precautions to minimize civilian harm, including the use of precision munitions and aerial surveillance, though it acknowledged reviewing the incident.
Drone attack in Nabatieh kills Syrian father and daughter
In Nabatieh, another Israeli strike hit a motorbike carrying a Syrian national and his 12-year-old daughter, the health ministry reported. After the initial strike, a drone targeted the pair a second time, killing the father. The girl was struck directly in a third attack and remains in critical condition following emergency surgery.
Hezbollah retaliates with drone attack on northern Israel
Hezbollah launched a drone into northern Israel on Saturday, injuring three Israeli soldiers, one of them seriously, according to the IDF. The group claimed the attack was in response to ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
The IDF confirmed intercepting an explosive drone near the border, attributing it to Hezbollah.
Escalation follows breakdown of ceasefire
The violence follows the collapse of a ceasefire brokered by the U.S. on April 16. Since then, Israeli forces and Hezbollah have exchanged near-daily fire, with Israel conducting airstrikes on what it describes as Hezbollah-linked infrastructure and personnel in southern Lebanon.
Lebanon's health ministry reported that over 120 people, including women and children, have been killed in Israeli attacks across the country in the past week. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its casualty reports.
Israeli occupation and destruction in southern Lebanon
Israeli forces currently occupy a strip of Lebanese territory along the border, aiming to establish a buffer zone free of Hezbollah presence. Entire villages in the area have been destroyed, drawing comparisons to Israel's military actions in Gaza. Human rights groups have raised concerns that some of these actions may constitute war crimes.
Since March 2, when Israel launched a large-scale offensive in Lebanon following Iranian retaliatory strikes, the Lebanese health ministry has recorded 2,795 deaths in the country.
Casualties on both sides
Israeli authorities report that 17 soldiers and one civilian have been killed in southern Lebanon, along with two civilians in northern Israel, since the escalation began.
