Brothers held in Thailand over deadly Goa nightclub blaze

Two brothers wanted in connection with a fire that killed 25 people at their Goa nightclub have been detained in Thailand, India's ambassador to Bangkok confirmed on Thursday.

Flight and capture

Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, owners of the Birch By Romeo Lane club, fled to Phuket shortly after the fire erupted early Sunday. Indian authorities sought Interpol's assistance after discovering their escape during a raid on their Delhi residence.

Nagesh Singh, India's ambassador to Thailand, told the BBC the brothers would be returned to India. The statement followed a Delhi court's refusal to grant them protection from arrest and a request by Goa's government to revoke their passports.

Statements and cooperation

The Luthra brothers, through their lawyer, stated they would return to India on Thursday and "submit themselves to the jurisdiction of the police authorities and the judicial system." They denied any intent to evade the law and pledged full cooperation.

"We undertake to co-operate with the police authorities."

Fire details and victims

Investigators believe the blaze started when fireworks were set off inside the venue, located in a bustling nightlife district of the coastal state. Most of the 25 victims were staff members; five were tourists.

Saurabh Luthra, identified on social media as the club's operating company chairman, posted a statement on Monday expressing "profound grief." He assured families of the deceased and injured that the management would provide "assistance, support and cooperation."

Ongoing investigation

Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Wednesday that six individuals had been arrested in connection with the incident, with further arrests expected. The state, known for its beaches and nightlife, attracts millions of tourists annually.

Indian authorities continue to gather evidence as the case proceeds.
