Recycling plant trials humanoid robots to ease harsh working conditions

A waste processing facility in Rainham, east London, is testing a humanoid robot to sort recyclables, aiming to reduce high staff turnover and improve safety in an industry plagued by hazardous conditions.

The challenges of manual recycling work

Sharp Group's Rainham plant processes up to 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling annually, relying on 24 agency workers to sort items like shoes, VHS cassettes, and concrete blocks on fast-moving conveyor belts. The work is grueling-dust-filled air, relentless noise, and physically demanding tasks contribute to an annual staff turnover rate of 40%.

Line supervisor Ken Dordoy highlights the difficulty: "The belt never stops. Workers are constantly picking, and many can't keep up. We rotate them every 20 minutes and pause the line for breaks, but it's still a tough job."

The waste management sector reports injury and illness rates 45% higher than other industries, with fatality rates significantly above the national average.

A humanoid solution: Alpha the recycling robot

The plant is now training Alpha, a humanoid robot developed by Chinese firm RealMan Robotics and adapted by UK-based TeknTrash Robotics. Unlike conventional automated systems, Alpha mimics human movements, allowing it to integrate into existing facilities without costly machinery redesigns.

TeknTrash CEO Al Costa explains the training process: "The robot learns in two stages-first, identifying items on the belt, then physically picking them up. Workers wear VR headsets to record their movements, which Alpha replicates."

A system called HoloLab uses multiple cameras to feed Alpha millions of data points daily, correcting errors when items are missed. Costa cautions that the technology is far from plug-and-play: "Robots need extensive data to work effectively. They're not ready to deploy straight out of the box."

Competing automation approaches

Other firms are pursuing different automation strategies. Colorado-based AMP Robotics uses AI-driven air jets to sort materials, claiming its systems operate at eight to ten times the speed of human workers. CEO Tim Stuart notes that AI continuously improves sorting accuracy and efficiency.

California startup Glacier, co-founded by Rebecca Hu-Thrams, employs mounted robotic arms and AI to handle unpredictable waste, including hazardous items like hand grenades or leaking cans. "Our models learn from billions of items, making them adaptable even for smaller, budget-strapped facilities," she says.

Despite varying approaches, industry experts agree that automation is essential. Yale University's Prof. Marian Chertow states: "Robotics and AI-driven vision systems offer the best path to improving material recovery, worker safety, and economic competitiveness in recycling."

Future of human workers in automated plants

Chelsea Sharp, the plant's finance director and granddaughter of Sharp Group's founder, acknowledges the harsh realities of manual sorting: "This is a dirty, noisy environment. Robots don't mind those conditions."

Sharp Group plans to retrain existing staff to maintain and oversee the robots, removing them from dangerous tasks like heavy lifting. However, the transition raises questions about job displacement as automation scales.

For now, Alpha remains in training, but if successful, it could operate 24/7 without breaks, holidays, or sick days-offering a potential solution to the industry's persistent labor challenges.
