Bear outsmarts authorities in Fukushima escape
A bear that attacked four people in north-east Japan evaded capture after allegedly opening a factory window and fleeing overnight, officials confirmed on Thursday.

City authorities in Fukushima reported that the bear appeared to have unlatched and pushed open a window to escape an electronics factory where it had taken refuge. This follows earlier observations of the animal using its paws to turn on a faucet for water.

Failed capture attempts
The bear entered a steel factory late Tuesday, attacking four individuals before moving to a nearby electronics plant. Authorities attempted to sedate it with a tranquilizer dart, but the effort failed. Food traps baited with fruit and honey also proved ineffective, as the bear consumed the bait without triggering the mechanism.
On Wednesday night, officials turned off the factory lights to lure the animal into traps, but it escaped through a window it apparently opened itself. Police ruled out shooting the bear due to flammable materials inside the facility.
Rising bear attacks in Japan
The incident comes amid a surge in bear encounters across Japan, with a record 13 fatalities reported between April 2025 and March 2026. Historically, attacks spike in autumn as bears prepare for hibernation.
Search efforts intensify
Fukushima authorities deployed drones on Thursday to locate the bear, while local schools shifted to online classes as a precaution. Mayor Baba acknowledged the escape, stating, "It's not that we neglected our response efforts, but we are left with regret."
