Maguire extends Manchester United stay

The 33-year-old defender has agreed to a new one-year contract with the option for an additional year, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

Contract details and incentives

Maguire's previous deal was set to expire at the end of the current season. While his base salary has been reduced, the agreement includes performance-based clauses that could increase his earnings if Manchester United qualifies for the Champions League.

Career at Old Trafford

Signed from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019-a record fee for a defender at the time-Maguire has made 266 appearances for the club. His tenure includes winning the League Cup in the 2022-23 season and the FA Cup the following year.

"Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together."

Highs and lows

Maguire's time at Manchester United has been marked by both achievements and challenges. Appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shortly after his arrival, he later faced criticism despite remaining a regular pick under Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

In April 2022, Cheshire Police searched his home following a bomb threat. His role came under further scrutiny under Erik ten Hag, who stripped him of the captaincy in July 2023 and explored a potential transfer to West Ham United. Maguire ultimately chose to stay at Old Trafford.

After limited playing time under Ruben Amorim, he regained a starting role under interim manager Michael Carrick, featuring in all 10 matches since the latter's appointment in mid-January.

Leadership and performance

Maguire emphasized the club's ambition and his confidence in future success, stating, "You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see."

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Maguire's professionalism and leadership, noting, "Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad."

Impact on the pitch

Despite criticism of certain aspects of his game, Maguire's managers have consistently valued his strengths: composure under pressure, strong tackling, passing range, positional awareness, and leadership in the dressing room.

Since joining Manchester United, Maguire has been a key figure in the team's defensive metrics. He ranks in the top 10 among Premier League centre-backs in various defensive statistics, particularly excelling in aerial duels and ball progression.

This season, despite missing two months due to a thigh injury, he has won 78.3% of his aerial duels-the highest percentage among outfield players in the league who have contested 20 or more such battles.

What's next

Maguire will miss Manchester United's upcoming Premier League match against Leeds United on Monday due to suspension. He is also awaiting a decision on whether his red card from a match against Bournemouth last month will result in further disciplinary action.

While his Old Trafford career has had its share of ups and downs, statistics show the team has performed better with Maguire on the pitch. Since his arrival in 2019, Manchester United's win rate in the Premier League has been higher in every season when he has featured-often significantly so.
