Google launches tool to shield personal data from search
An underused free service by Google allows users to request the removal of sensitive personal information from search results, reducing exposure to data brokers and potential threats.
How data brokers exploit personal information
Companies known as data brokers collect and sell personal details-including names, home addresses, and phone numbers-to third parties, ranging from marketers to identity thieves. This practice exposes individuals to risks such as harassment, fraud, and stalking.
Google's search engine, which indexes vast amounts of online data, often surfaces this sensitive information, inadvertently amplifying these risks. However, the company's Results About You tool offers a simple way to request the removal of such details from search results.
How the tool works
Users with a Google account can set up alerts for their name, email, phone number, or physical address. The tool scans search results and notifies users when their information appears. With a single click, they can request its removal. In the U.S., the service also flags highly sensitive data like Social Security numbers and passport details.
For those without a Google account, a manual process is available to report exposed information. While the tool doesn't delete data from the original websites, removing it from Google Search significantly reduces its visibility.
"This is one of the most important easy-to-use privacy tools available. It's a no-brainer for anyone concerned about their digital footprint."

Limitations and privacy concerns
While the tool adds a layer of protection, it doesn't guarantee complete privacy. Dedicated individuals may still find ways to access personal data through other means. Additionally, users must input their sensitive information into Google's system to use the service, raising concerns about data handling.
Google assures users that submitted data is not repurposed and is protected by encryption and security protocols. A company spokesperson stated that the information is used solely for the tool's intended purpose, with strict safeguards in place to prevent misuse.
How to use Results About You
Accessing the tool is straightforward: visit the Results About You hub and complete the form. Users can also manually report problematic search results by selecting the three-dot menu next to a link and choosing "Remove result."
Google may also remove results containing information about family members in certain cases. However, content from government and news websites remains exempt from removal requests.
Beyond Google: Further steps for privacy
For those seeking to erase their data entirely from the internet, additional measures are necessary. This includes contacting data brokers directly or using paid services to manage removal requests. California residents can utilize the state's free Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (Drop), which submits deletion requests to thousands of data brokers simultaneously.

Adoption remains low despite effectiveness
Since its launch in 2022, over 10 million people have used Results About You, a small fraction of Google's 1.8 billion account holders. Despite its accessibility and impact, awareness of the tool remains limited.
Klosowski emphasizes its value: "You're peeling off the first layer of information that's easy to find. It's a critical step in reducing your digital exposure."
