Google wins green light for major Essex data hub

Epping Forest District Council has approved Google's plans to transform North Weald Airfield into a large-scale data centre campus, promising 780 local jobs and an annual £79 million boost to the regional economy.

Project scope and economic impact

A council report presented to members estimated the development would generate 200 direct positions alongside 580 indirect roles, while contributing £319 million to the national economy each year.

Google purchased 52 acres (21 hectares) of the airfield from the council in January 2024 for £88.2 million. The tech giant will demolish existing fire-station blocks and erect two data halls, separate office space, internal access roads, and car parking.

Local benefits and concessions

Conservative vice-chairman Alan Lion told the planning committee that the arrival of Google aligned with the council's economic strategy and would deliver "significant" employment opportunities for the district.

"Google coming here is something of an advantage to Epping Forest because it does provide certain additional benefits."

In return, the council has accepted that the popular North Weald Market, held every Saturday, may lose up to 100 of its 300 stalls to accommodate the development. The market sells clothing, homeware and food.

Heritage site remains operational

North Weald Airfield, which opened in 1916 and hosted Battle of Britain fighter squadrons in 1940, continues to operate as an active aerodrome with over 40,000 aircraft movements annually. The site also houses its own museum.

Conditions and next steps

Approval was granted subject to Section 106 legal agreements, which have yet to be finalised by Google. The council report indicated that contributions could help fund upgrades to nearby M11 junction seven.
