Golden Globes 2026: Hollywood celebrates film and television achievements
Hollywood's elite gathered in Beverly Hills on Sunday for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, where Timothée Chalamet and Jessie Buckley emerged as leading winners. The ceremony, a key precursor to the Oscars, honored both film and television performances, with One Battle After Another taking home the most awards of the night.
Chalamet's first Globe win boosts Oscar campaign
Timothée Chalamet, 30, secured his first Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy for his role in the quirky table tennis comedy Marty Supreme. The win places him as a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards, where he has yet to claim a statue.
Chalamet triumphed over heavyweights including Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney. In his acceptance speech, he reflected on his journey: "I'm in a category with many greats. My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up-always be grateful for what you have. It's allowed me to leave ceremonies in the past empty-handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here. But I'd be lying if I didn't say those moments make this one that much sweeter."
He dedicated the award to his parents and partner, Kylie Jenner, before leaving the stage.
Buckley and Hamnet surprise with drama wins
Irish actress Jessie Buckley was named best drama actress for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet, the adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel about the death of William Shakespeare's son. The film also won best drama film, defying expectations that the vampire thriller Sinners would dominate the category.
"This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in. It was such an extraordinary set to be part of-we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, a mostly Polish crew, beside our British family."

Director Chloe Zhao appeared stunned when Hamnet was announced as best drama film. Producer Steven Spielberg praised Zhao as "the only filmmaker on the planet who could tell this story." Zhao used her speech to honor the film's crew and village, some of whom lost loved ones during production.
Other film highlights: One Battle After Another leads with four wins
Despite DiCaprio missing out on an individual award, his film One Battle After Another swept four categories, including best musical or comedy film, best director (Paul Thomas Anderson), and best screenplay. Teyana Taylor won best supporting actress for the film, using her platform to address young women of color: "Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into."
Stellan Skarsgård, 74, won best supporting actor for Sentimental Value and urged audiences to experience films in theaters. "Cinema should be seen in cinemas," he declared to applause. Brazilian star Wagner Moura won best drama actor for The Secret Agent, a political thriller about generational trauma.
In animation, KPop Demon Hunters took home best animated film and best song for Golden. Rose Byrne was named best actress in a musical or comedy for If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, joking about her family's support-including her husband, Bobby Cannavale, who skipped the event to adopt a bearded dragon.
Television triumphs: British talent shines in Adolescence
The Globes' television categories saw British actors dominate. Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty won for their roles in Netflix's Adolescence. Cooper, a 16-year-old from Warrington, won best TV supporting actor and humbly acknowledged his rapid rise: "I'm still very much an apprentice. It's mad, what is going on?" He closed with Liverpool FC's motto: "You'll never walk alone."
Seth Rogen won best TV comedy actor for The Studio, a show that ironically featured a fictional Golden Globes episode. "This is so weird, we just pretended to do this," he quipped. Other TV winners included Jean Smart (Hacks), Noah Wyle (The Pitt), and Michelle Williams (Dying for Sex). Amy Poehler claimed the first-ever best podcast award for Good Hang with Amy Poehler.
Looking ahead to the Oscars
With the Academy Awards just weeks away, Chalamet's Globe win solidifies his position as a frontrunner. One Battle After Another and Hamnet are also expected to feature prominently in Oscar nominations, while Sinners will likely focus on its box office success and musical score.
