Promising Ghanaian footballer killed in armed attack on team bus
Twenty-year-old Dominic Frimpong died after gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying his Berekum Chelsea teammates home from a match on Sunday, the club confirmed.
Ambush details emerge
Masked attackers armed with guns and assault rifles blocked the road and fired at the bus as it returned from a Ghana Premier League game in Samreboi, 270 km from Berekum. The team had just lost 1-0 to Samartex.
According to Berekum Chelsea, the driver attempted to reverse, but the assailants continued shooting, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for cover. The bus carried 30 people at the time of the attack.
Police launch manhunt
Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and died while receiving medical treatment. Authorities said six armed men were involved in the attack.
Ghana Police Service announced it had deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area, vowing to arrest the perpetrators "within the shortest possible time."
Football community reacts with shock
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed "profound shock and deep sorrow," calling Frimpong a "promising young talent" whose dedication embodied the league's spirit. The GFA is in contact with authorities and the club, urging measures to ensure justice.
"If the lives of the people or the key architect of the game cannot be protected, then it is not worth playing the game."

The Ghana Premier League also extended support to Berekum Chelsea, calling on security agencies to safeguard clubs traveling for matches.
Wider safety concerns resurface
Sunday's attack underscores longstanding fears about road safety in Ghana. Clubs like FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities, and AshantiGold have reported similar incidents in recent years.
The GFA announced it will review and strengthen security arrangements for traveling teams to prevent future tragedies.
Tributes pour in for Frimpong
Frimpong joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January. He had scored two goals in 13 appearances this season. Aduana FC mourned his loss, offering prayers to his family and the football community.
Berekum Chelsea, originally founded as Semereka FC in 2000, renamed itself after Michael Essien's transfer to Chelsea FC sparked local popularity for the English club.
