Teacher fatally struck during student prank
Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old high school instructor in Hall County, Georgia, died after being accidentally run over by a car driven by one of his students during a toilet-papering prank, authorities confirmed.
How the incident unfolded
Hughes exited his home early Tuesday to confront students who were throwing toilet paper over trees in his yard. The ground was wet from rain, causing him to slip and fall. As the students fled in two vehicles, one of the cars struck Hughes, according to police reports.
Charges and family response
The driver, 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace, faces vehicular homicide charges. Four other 18-year-olds involved were charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.
In a statement to The New York Times, Hughes's wife, Laura Hughes-also a teacher at the same school-said her husband was aware of the prank and had been waiting to catch the students. She described him as beloved by students and requested that all charges be dropped.
"This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students. This would be counter to Jason's lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children."

Community and school reactions
Before emergency responders arrived, Wallace and two other students attempted to assist Hughes, the sheriff's office stated. The Hall County School District called Hughes a "passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues."
A memorial has been set up outside the school where Hughes taught and coached, with community members paying tribute to his legacy.
Investigation ongoing
The sheriff's office has not yet commented on the family's request to drop charges. The BBC has reached out for further details but has not received a response at the time of publication.
