Survivor leaves hospital after brutal assault
A 26-year-old woman, mother of two, was discharged from a Faridabad hospital late Monday, one week after she suffered severe injuries during a gang rape in Haryana, police confirmed.
Attack details emerge
The victim was waiting for transport near midnight on December 29 when two men in an ambulance offered her a ride. They drove her to an isolated area, where one man stood guard outside the vehicle while the other assaulted her inside. She was then thrown from the moving ambulance, police said.
Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav stated the crime occurred between 12:30 and 2:00 a.m. The woman was found with serious head and facial injuries, along with multiple fractures, and was rushed to the hospital at 5:30 a.m. on December 30.
Suspects arrested, identification parade planned
Authorities acted quickly, arresting the two men and seizing the ambulance. Both suspects were later produced in court and sent to prison, according to police.
Senior police official Mukesh Kumar told the BBC that the survivor would be taken to prison for an identification parade once the court approves the request. She will be asked to identify the attackers from a group of men.
Survivor's condition and public reaction
Shalini Chopra, a social worker and opposition politician who spoke with the survivor after her discharge, described her as "better but still in pain."
The case has reignited national outrage, drawing parallels to the 2012 Delhi gang rape that sparked massive protests and led to stricter anti-rape laws, including the death penalty for extreme cases. Despite these reforms, sexual violence remains pervasive in India.
Government data for 2023 recorded 29,670 rapes, 2,796 attempted rapes, 849 child rapes, and 94 attempted child rapes.
Legal context and ongoing challenges
In the 2012 Delhi case, four convicted rapists were executed in 2020, while a fifth died in prison and a juvenile served time in a reform facility. However, activists argue that systemic issues persist, with thousands of sexual assaults reported annually.
