Champion racehorse finds new life on Donegal beaches
Spirit Dancer, a thoroughbred once owned by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has traded the racetrack for daily strolls along the shores of County Donegal-and a nightly beer with dinner.
From Bahrain triumphs to retirement
Spirit Dancer earned roughly $2 million (£1.5 million) during his racing career, including back-to-back victories in the Bahrain International Trophy in 2023 and 2024. Co-owned by Ferguson, the gelding was ridden to success by top jockey Oisín Orr, who described the horse as a pivotal part of his career.
However, a career-ending injury last autumn-a sprained fetlock joint, akin to a human ankle-forced his retirement. Rather than being sent to pasture in England, Orr arranged for Spirit Dancer to live at his family's stables in Rathmullan, Donegal, where he learned to ride.
A new routine: Beach walks and beer
Under the care of trainer Rachel Carton, Orr's stepmother, Spirit Dancer has settled into a relaxed retirement. Carton revealed the horse now enjoys a few drops of locally brewed beer with his dinner-a treat shared by other horses at the stables.
"He's gone past his elite athlete stage, and I work at a well-known local brewery, so I'm able to give him a beer with his dinner every night. The horses here all enjoy it!"

Carton praised Spirit Dancer's temperament, calling him "a step above most horses" with a superior character that made him both a champion and an easygoing companion.
Ferguson's bond with the horse
Carton noted that Ferguson, who bred Spirit Dancer, had deep respect for the horse, likening him to the athletes he managed in football. She said the former manager recognized Spirit Dancer's exceptional ability and calm demeanor, following his life from foal to retirement.
Orr, who rode Spirit Dancer in Bahrain, shared videos of the horse's new routine with Ferguson and his former trainer, Richard Fahey. The jockey expressed confidence that Donegal would be a perfect fit for the retired champion.
A chip off the old block
Spirit Dancer is the offspring of Frankel, the legendary racehorse often compared to sprinting icon Usain Bolt. Carton drew parallels between the two, noting that Frankel also mellowed with age, becoming a good-natured horse-traits she sees in Spirit Dancer.
"Anyone into racing will have heard of Frankel, who is pretty much a superstar racehorse and sire. So far, Spirit Dancer seems to be going the same way-very pleasant to be around."
