Four young children killed in nursery attack
Three boys and a girl, all aged between two and three, were fatally stabbed at a nursery school in Kampala on Thursday morning, Ugandan police confirmed.
Suspect detained amid chaotic scenes
A 39-year-old man is in custody after allegedly using multiple knives to carry out the attack. Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said the suspect had visited the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program School earlier in the week, inquiring about enrolling his own child. He returned Thursday, paid an admission fee, then launched the assault before 11:00 local time (08:00 GMT).
Enraged parents attempted to lynch the suspect before police intervened, according to AFP. Videos circulating on social media show distressed crowds, including relatives searching for information about their children.
Investigation underway as details emerge
Police chief Abas Byakagaba visited the scene in the upscale Ggaba suburb and appealed for calm while investigations continue. Authorities are probing the suspect's motive, background, and any potential connections to the school. The remaining 10 children present during the attack have been reunited with their families.
"He paid for admission, then proceeded to attack these children, killing four of them instantly," Kawala told reporters.
