Four detained in Jharkhand over fatal witchcraft attack
Police in India's eastern Jharkhand state have arrested four individuals accused of setting ablaze a 28-year-old woman and her 10-month-old son after villagers branded her a witch. The victims' husband, who was also assaulted, remains hospitalized with critical burns.
Incident details
The attack unfolded late Tuesday in Kudsai, a remote tribal hamlet approximately 250 km from the state capital Ranchi. According to police accounts, a mob of roughly a dozen people, including five women, forced their way into the family's home and doused Jyoti Sinku and her infant with accelerant before igniting them.
Kolhan Sinku, the husband, recounted from his hospital bed that he begged the assailants to resolve the dispute through the village council, but they ignored his pleas. Authorities have since filed charges of murder and criminal conspiracy based on his testimony and that of another relative.
Motive and background
The violence erupted following the death of a local villager, Pustun Birua, who had been suffering from anxiety and fainting spells. His widow, Jano Birua, revealed she consulted an unlicensed practitioner-common in areas lacking medical infrastructure-who dismissed physical illness as the cause.
Rumors soon spread that Jyoti Sinku had bewitched Birua, compounded by recent livestock deaths in the community. When asked why she didn't seek hospital care for her husband, Jano Birua stated, "We are poor people, so it wasn't possible to take him that far."
Broader context
Witchcraft-related killings remain a persistent issue in India's marginalized tribal regions, where superstition often fills gaps left by absent healthcare and education. The National Crime Records Bureau reports over 2,500 such murders between 2000 and 2016, predominantly targeting women.
Just months prior to this incident, five members of a family in neighboring Bihar state were similarly burned alive over witchcraft accusations. Jharkhand police have announced plans to launch rural awareness campaigns to combat superstition-driven violence.
Ongoing investigation
While four suspects are in custody, authorities continue searching for additional mob participants. A specialized police unit has been assembled to track down remaining perpetrators, with no public statements issued by the accused thus far.
