Shooting leaves ex-NRL star in critical condition
Matt Utai, 44, was targeted in a drive-by attack outside his home in Sydney's Greenacre suburb on Tuesday, police said. The former rugby league player remains in critical condition after surgery.
Police describe brazen ambush
New South Wales Police confirmed Utai sustained gunshot wounds to his lower leg, shoulder, and upper chest. Superintendent Rodney Hart called the incident a "targeted" and "brazen ambush," though investigators have not yet determined whether Utai was the intended victim.
"Whether the victim was the intended target or it was somebody that he knows or associates with will form part of the investigation," Hart said.
Burned-out SUV recovered nearby
Shots were fired from a white SUV, which was later found torched in Wiley Park, a neighboring suburb. Police are treating the vehicle as linked to the shooting and have sent it for forensic analysis.
Utai's rugby league career
Utai played 167 NRL games across two clubs: the Canterbury Bulldogs (2004-2010) and the Wests Tigers (2011-2013). He scored two tries in the Bulldogs' 2004 NRL Grand Final victory over the Sydney Roosters.
Internationally, Utai represented both New Zealand and Samoa. He earned four Test caps for the Kiwis in 2002 before switching to Samoa for the 2008 World Cup, where he scored two tries in three matches.
Investigation ongoing
Police have not released details on suspects or motives. The incident is being treated as a targeted attack, and authorities are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
