Fitzpatrick triumphs in playoff at RBC Heritage

England's Matt Fitzpatrick secured his second PGA Tour victory in a month after defeating world number one Scottie Scheffler in a dramatic playoff at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina.

Final round drama

Fitzpatrick entered the final round with a three-shot lead, aiming to build on his recent win at the Valspar Championship. He maintained a flawless performance through the first 17 holes, carding two under par without a single bogey. However, Scheffler mounted a strong comeback, narrowing the gap to just one stroke by the time both players reached the 18th tee.

At the par-five 18th, both players missed the green in regulation. Scheffler managed to save par with a successful up-and-down, finishing his round at four under (67). Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, struggled with his chip shot, resulting in his first bogey of the day and forcing a playoff.

Playoff victory

On the first playoff hole, Fitzpatrick delivered a precise approach shot and sank a clutch birdie putt to clinch the title. The win marked his ninth career PGA Tour victory and his second in just four weeks.

"To win it twice means the world. To go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get over the line at the 73rd [hole] is special," Fitzpatrick said after the match.

Scheffler's near-miss streak continues

Scheffler, who finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the Masters the previous week, expressed admiration for Fitzpatrick's performance.

"I put up a good fight this week. It was just one of those deals where I played three out of four days with Fitzy, and every time he needed something, he made something happen. You name it, he was doing it, so he earned this one for sure," Scheffler said.

Leaderboard highlights

South Korea's Si-woo Kim finished third at 16 under par after a final-round 68, two strokes behind the playoff duo. Collin Morikawa, Harris English, and Ludvig Åberg shared fourth place at 13 under, while Will Zalatoris rounded out the top group at 12 under.

Fitzpatrick's rising form

The victory extends Fitzpatrick's impressive run, which includes a second-place finish at last month's Players Championship. His consistent performances signal a strong start to the season as he aims to build on this momentum.
