First man freed after week trapped in Laos cave
Rescue teams pulled one of five gold hunters to safety on Friday, eight days after flash floods blocked their exit from a remote cavern in central Laos. Two others remain missing.
Discovery and initial conditions
The group entered the cave on 20 May while searching for gold in Xaysomboun province. Heavy rains triggered sudden flooding, cutting off their escape route. Divers located the five survivors on Wednesday, huddled 300 meters from the entrance. Footage showed them weak, covered in mud, and complaining of chest pain and extreme hunger.
Rescue efforts intensify
Thunderstorms forecast for Friday evening added urgency to the operation. Initial plans to drain floodwaters failed, prompting discussions about teaching the men to scuba dive as a last resort. The exact method used to extract the first survivor has not been disclosed, though rescuers promised details later.
Kengkard Bonggawong, a member of the Thai rescue team, announced the breakthrough on social media: "One person has got out of the cave safely. We will assess the other four and search for the remaining two tomorrow."
International support arrives
The trapped men's plight drew global attention, mirroring the 2018 Thai cave rescue of a youth football team. Divers from Thailand, Indonesia, France, and Australia arrived in Laos on Friday to assist. Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, who participated in the 2018 operation, described the environment as "so hostile that anything can happen."
