FBI investigates former counterterrorism director over leaks

The FBI is examining allegations that Joe Kent, who stepped down this week as director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, disclosed classified information, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Probe predates resignation

Sources told CBS News the FBI's criminal division launched the inquiry before Kent left his post. Kent announced his departure on Tuesday, citing moral objections to U.S. policy toward Iran. The FBI declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.

Resignation letter sparks controversy

In a letter to President Donald Trump, Kent claimed the administration's decision to escalate military action against Iran stemmed from "pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby." The White House dismissed the assertion, stating Trump had "compelling evidence" Iran was preparing to strike first.

The Anti-Defamation League criticized Kent's remarks as "old-age antisemitic tropes." Kent reiterated his claims in an interview with right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson, alleging no intelligence supported the threat of an imminent Iranian attack.

Allegations of insubordination

Taylor Budowich, former deputy White House chief of staff, accused Kent of being "often at the center of national security leaks" but provided no specifics. Budowich also alleged Kent worked to "subvert the chain of command" and undermine Trump.

Kent's defense and Trump's response

Kent told Carlson there was no "robust debate" before the Iran strikes and that some officials had limited access to Trump. He described his resignation conversation with Trump as "great" and said they parted on good terms.

Trump later called Kent a "nice guy" but said his departure was "a good thing," adding he considered Kent "very weak on security." Kent, a longtime Trump ally, was confirmed to his role in July 2025 after two unsuccessful congressional campaigns.

Timeline of events

(Tuesday) Kent resigns, citing opposition to Iran policy. (Wednesday) Kent appears on Carlson's podcast, repeating claims about Israel's influence. (Thursday) White House and Trump respond, dismissing Kent's allegations.
