FA Cup quarter-finals: Key clashes this weekend

The FA Cup quarter-finals kick off this Saturday, with Manchester City hosting Liverpool in the standout fixture. BBC Sport analysts Chris Sutton and former Crystal Palace striker Richard Riakporhe preview the ties, while AI predictions add another layer to the pre-match debate.

City and Liverpool clash in high-stakes encounter

Manchester City, fresh from lifting the Carabao Cup, face Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium in a match that could shape both teams' seasons. City, currently second in the Premier League, have already beaten Liverpool twice this season in league play. However, Liverpool's recent form has been shaky, with just one point from their last three Premier League games.

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton believes City will edge the contest. "This has been a far-from-perfect season for City, and speculation about Pep Guardiola's future doesn't help," he said. "But they could still finish with two cups. Some fans might be disappointed, but they shouldn't be."

"City are at home and have already beaten Liverpool twice this season. I just have a feeling they will take this one as well."

Sutton predicts a 3-1 victory for City, while Riakporhe, a Crystal Palace fan and professional boxer, expects a tighter 2-1 win for the hosts. Microsoft Copilot's AI model forecasts a 2-1 scoreline in City's favor.

Chelsea face League One underdogs in crucial test

Chelsea, sixth in the Premier League, host League One's Port Vale at Stamford Bridge in a tie that could define manager Liam Rosenior's tenure. Chelsea have lost their last four matches in all competitions, including defeats to Newcastle and Everton, raising pressure on Rosenior.

"This game is even bigger for Rosenior than Liverpool's tie is for Arne Slot," Sutton noted. "If he loses this, alarm bells will ring at Stamford Bridge. He needs a performance, not just a win."

Port Vale, bottom of League One, reached the quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over Fleetwood Town. However, Sutton expects Chelsea to dominate, predicting a 4-0 victory. Riakporhe agrees, forecasting a 3-0 win for the Blues, while the AI model settles on 3-0.

Arsenal's injury crisis looms over Southampton tie

Arsenal, top of the Premier League, travel to Southampton, who are flying high in the Championship with 14 unbeaten games. However, Arsenal's injury woes could play a decisive role. Mikel Arteta's side are already without key players ahead of their Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

"Arsenal were second best in the Carabao Cup final," Sutton said. "If they lose this, people will start talking about their bottle again."

Southampton are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their famous 1976 FA Cup final win over Manchester United. However, Sutton predicts a narrow 1-0 victory for Arsenal, matching the scoreline from their 2003 final. Riakporhe goes further, tipping a 2-0 win for the Gunners, while the AI model suggests a 3-1 Arsenal triumph.

Relegation rivals Leeds and West Ham collide

The most unpredictable tie sees Leeds United host West Ham United at the London Stadium. Both teams are embroiled in the Premier League relegation battle, with West Ham playing Wolves in the league just two days after this cup clash.

"Neither team wants extra time," Sutton said. "But that's exactly what I think will happen. Leeds will find a winner in the end." He predicts a 2-1 victory for Leeds after extra time. Riakporhe struggles to call the tie, joking, "It's going to be 3-2 to someone," before settling on a 3-2 win for Leeds. The AI model forecasts a 2-2 draw after extra time, with West Ham winning on penalties.

Riakporhe's football roots and FA Cup memories

Richard Riakporhe, now a British heavyweight title contender, reflected on his footballing past. "Football was my first love," he said. "My brother and I played every day, dreaming of representing Crystal Palace. We even joined Meryl Rovers, run by Jason Euell's mum."

Riakporhe, who boxed at Selhurst Park in 2024, recalled Palace's FA Cup triumph over Manchester City last year. "Wembley was incredible. I told my friend's City-supporting son to give me a hug before kick-off-so I could offer my condolences afterward."

However, he also experienced the pain of an upset, as Palace crashed out to non-league Macclesfield this season. "When it happens to another team, it's hilarious. When it's you, it's devastating."

What's at stake

All ties are single-leg affairs, with extra time and penalties deciding the winner if needed. Manchester City aim to reach the semi-finals for the eighth consecutive season, while Liverpool seek redemption after a dip in form. Chelsea and Arsenal face pressure to deliver, while Leeds and West Ham battle for survival on multiple fronts.
