€2.9m cannabis haul intercepted at Rosslare Europort
Irish authorities seized over 150 kg of suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of €2.9 million (£2.5 million) from a freight unit that arrived by ferry from France on Thursday.
Discovery and arrest
Revenue officers at Rosslare Europort in County Wexford conducted a search of the freight unit after it disembarked from a ferry originating in Dunkirk. A mobile X-ray scanner revealed approximately 145 kg of suspected herbal cannabis and 7.9 kg of suspected cannabis resin hidden within the shipment.
A man in his 20s was arrested by gardaí (Irish police) following the discovery and remains in custody.
Routine profiling led to seizure
Gardaí stated the drugs were uncovered "as a result of routine profiling," a standard procedure used to identify high-risk shipments. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt organised crime groups involved in the importation, sale, and supply of illegal narcotics.
"This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs," gardaí said.
Freight route and concealment
The freight unit travelled by ferry from Dunkirk, France, to Rosslare Europort, a key entry point for goods moving between continental Europe and Ireland. The cannabis was concealed within the cargo, evading initial visual inspection before the X-ray scan detected anomalies.
Next steps in investigation
The seized drugs will undergo forensic analysis to confirm their composition and origin. Authorities are expected to collaborate with international partners, including French law enforcement, as part of the broader investigation into the supply chain.
