Sixth influencer arrested in Ethiopia over dress code controversy
Ethiopian authorities have detained a sixth prominent TikTok creator, Adonay Berhane, following allegations of violating public decency at a recent awards ceremony. The arrests have sparked a national debate over cultural norms and digital expression.
Detentions follow Ethiopia Creative Awards 2025
Berhane, a 25-year-old lifestyle and motivational content creator with nearly four million followers, was named TikToker of the Year at the Ethiopia Creative Awards 2025-the same event now under scrutiny. Police announced his detention on Wednesday evening, stating he is under investigation.
Five other influencers were arrested earlier this week for similar allegations. Among them were Wongelawit Gebre Endrias (known as Evan), a fashion and lifestyle creator who wore an oversized blazer without a bra, and Yohannes Mekonnen (Jahnny), a dancer and content reviewer who carried a man-bag. Bereket Tsegaye, Mekdim Dereje, and Girum Gezahegn were also detained.
Public divided over cultural clash
The arrests have ignited fierce discussions online. Supporters argue the detentions infringe on freedom of expression and creativity, while conservative voices defend the police, insisting public figures must uphold cultural values.
Adonay's mother, Abeba Gebru, expressed shock to BBC Tigrinya, calling her son her "backbone" and an "example to Ethiopian youth." Having spent his teenage years in Canada, Adonay returned to Ethiopia and often warns followers about the challenges of immigration, encouraging them to build their futures at home.
Police cite moral concerns amid digital growth
Ethiopian police allege the detainees promoted behavior that "undermines public morality," reflecting broader anxieties about the influence of online trends on young Ethiopians. With over eight million social media users nationwide, the incident underscores tensions between Ethiopia's rapidly evolving digital culture and traditional expectations.
Federal police have warned of further action against those "violating the country's cultural values" or spreading what they describe as "shallow culture." The government has not commented on the detentions.

None of the six detained influencers have publicly addressed their treatment. Their families and supporters continue to demand transparency, while critics argue the arrests set a troubling precedent for creative expression in Ethiopia.
