England secure dominant win despite batting struggles

England revived their T20 World Cup hopes with a commanding 51-run victory over Sri Lanka in the Super 8s at Pallekele, thanks to a disciplined bowling performance that dismantled the co-hosts for just 95.

Bowling brilliance turns the tide

After posting a modest 146-9, England's bowlers exploited a tricky pitch to stifle Sri Lanka's chase. Will Jacks led the charge with three early wickets, removing Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake in consecutive deliveries before claiming Dunith Wellalage to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 34-5.

Jofra Archer set the tone by dismissing opener Pathum Nissanka, while Liam Dawson and Jamie Overton combined to wrap up the tail. Dasun Shanaka's 30 was Sri Lanka's only resistance as they collapsed in 16.4 overs.

Salt and Jacks rescue England's innings

England's batting remained inconsistent, with Jos Buttler (7) and Jacob Bethell (0) falling cheaply. Phil Salt's 62 off 40 balls and Jacks' 21 provided the backbone of the total, with the latter also contributing crucial wickets in a standout all-round display.

The top order's struggles persisted, with only a 26-run partnership between Salt and Sam Curran offering stability. Jacks and Jamie Overton added late momentum with boundary hits in the final overs.

Pitch conditions play decisive role

The Pallekele surface offered turn and variable bounce, favoring spinners like Jacks. England's captain Harry Brook capitalized by persisting with Jacks, who exploited the conditions to trigger Sri Lanka's collapse.

Archer's pace and accuracy also proved effective, accounting for Nissanka and Kamil Mishara early in the innings. Sri Lanka's batsmen struggled to adapt, with Dushan Hemantha's bizarre dismissal-hitting his own stumps-highlighting their woes.

Path to semi-finals narrows

England's victory keeps their semi-final hopes alive, with matches against Pakistan and New Zealand remaining in the Super 8s. A single win from those games should secure their progression.

However, concerns linger over Buttler's form and the top order's reliability. The team's strategy of batting depth-with Jacks and Overton at seven and nine respectively-has provided a safety net amid the struggles.

"England's bowlers adapted brilliantly to the conditions, but we know the batting needs to fire sooner rather than later,"
