Elmo's neutral NBA finals post sparks outrage among Knicks fans
New York City's beloved Sesame Street character Elmo has found himself at the center of a social media firestorm after refusing to pick a side in the NBA finals, drawing sharp criticism from Knicks supporters.
The controversy
Elmo, the iconic red puppet from the long-running children's show, posted on X earlier this week, expressing hope that both teams in the finals would enjoy the games. The Knicks, representing New York City, are currently competing in a best-of-seven series against the San Antonio Spurs for the championship-their first finals appearance since 1999.
Fans interpreted Elmo's neutral stance as a betrayal, flooding the post with angry replies. Many accused the character of "fence-sitting," with one user writing, "Traitor." Another fan urged, "Elmo, you can't both sides this one."
Citywide support for the Knicks
New Yorkers have rallied behind the Knicks, filling streets and bars with celebrations after the team's victory in Game 1 on Wednesday. The city's fervent support for the team has made Elmo's neutral post even more contentious.
Dozens of viral tweets targeted the puppet, with some using expletives and others reminding Elmo of his Manhattan roots. "Elmo don't forget the streets that raised you," one fan wrote in a relatively mild response.
Government agencies join the criticism
The backlash extended beyond fans, with city agencies weighing in. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) mocked Elmo on X, comparing him to the costumed impersonators in Times Square. "Just like in Times Square, we think this Elmo is an imposter," the NYPD account posted.
The city's transportation department even threatened to remove the official Sesame Street sign in Upper Manhattan, installed during former Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration.
Elmo's response and history of controversies
Elmo attempted to defuse the situation with a playful follow-up post on Thursday, writing, "KNICKS that last message! Elmo didn't mean to SPUR you on!"
The puppet, who first appeared on Sesame Street in 1980, is known for promoting kindness and unity. However, this is not the first time Elmo has faced online backlash. In 2022, a long-running feud with Rocco, a pet rock on the show, became a meme after Elmo expressed frustration over Rocco's inability to perform human activities like eating cookies.
In 2024, Elmo's innocent question, "How is everybody doing?" on X was met with a wave of sarcastic and jaded responses. The character's account was also hacked last year, leading to the posting of antisemitic messages. The show's creators condemned the posts as "disgusting."
Fans demand loyalty
As the Knicks continue their finals run, fans are warning Elmo to pick a side-or face further consequences. "This is how serious NY is taking this Finals," one fan wrote. "Elmo had to retract his statement cause the city was like you a New Yorker."
