Lawsuit alleges Samsung used Dua Lipa's photo without consent

Pop star Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the tech giant of using her image on television packaging without permission. The legal action was submitted on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Allegations of unauthorized use

The lawsuit claims Samsung featured a photograph of Lipa's face on packaging for multiple television models sold in the U.S. without her approval. According to the filing, the company allegedly exploited the singer's fame to boost product sales.

"Samsung's packaging was designed to improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa's hard-earned success to promote and sell its products," the lawsuit stated.

Legal claims and evidence

The lawsuit includes accusations of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of Lipa's likeness. The image in question was taken during her 2024 performance at the Austin City Limits Festival, and Lipa holds the copyright to the photograph.

Lipa first discovered her image on Samsung packaging in June 2025, the filing revealed. Fans on social media also noticed, with some calling the product the "Dua Lipa TV Box." Two Instagram comments cited in the lawsuit highlighted the impact: one user said they would "get that TV just because Dua is on it," while another remarked, "If you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it."

Samsung's response and prior demands

Lipa's legal team alleges that Samsung ignored "repeated demands" to stop using her image. The BBC has reached out to Samsung for comment but has not yet received a response.

Lipa's brand partnerships

The 30-year-old singer has established numerous commercial collaborations, including deals with Puma, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Apple, Porsche, and Chanel. In 2025, she also became a global ambassador for Nespresso. Her latest album, Radical Optimism, was released in 2024.
