DR Congo celebrates first World Cup berth in 52 years

The Democratic Republic of Congo has declared a national public holiday after its football team secured a place in the 2026 World Cup for the first time since 1974. The government urged citizens to mark the occasion with celebrations across the country.

Extra-time winner sparks nationwide joy

The Leopards clinched their spot in the tournament after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Jamaica in a play-off match on Tuesday. Axel Tuanzebe, a former Manchester United defender, scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute, sending fans into euphoria.

Celebrations erupted in the capital, Kinshasa, shortly after midnight as news of the win spread. Supporters took to the streets, waving flags and chanting in jubilation.

"Despite the pain, war, and occupation we face, this victory fills us with pride. I am overwhelmed with emotion and happiness."

Public holiday announced amid mixed reactions

The Ministry of Labour and Employment declared Wednesday a public holiday, calling the qualification a "historic" achievement and encouraging citizens to "celebrate in unity, fervour, and national pride."

Many employers, including banks and shops in Kinshasa, closed their doors in observance of the holiday. However, some businesses remained open, citing the short notice of the announcement, which was made at 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT).

Decades of conflict overshadowed by sporting triumph

DR Congo has endured years of conflict, particularly in its eastern regions, where fighting intensified last year after the M23 rebel group seized large areas. Despite tensions with neighbouring Rwanda, which is accused of backing the rebels, Rwanda's government congratulated DR Congo on its qualification.

"Leopards stepping up for Africa! Congratulations DR Congo, go make the continent proud on the world stage."

"I am deeply grateful to have scored that goal for the team and the nation. I understand the magnitude of what it represents and the joy it brings to our people."

Road to the World Cup

DR Congo will face Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, in their opening match on 17 June in Houston, USA. They will also compete against Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage.

The team is the 10th African nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
