Luiz to rejoin Villa on loan

Aston Villa have secured an agreement to bring midfielder Douglas Luiz back to the club on loan, with the deal expected to be finalized before Monday's transfer deadline.

Luiz's journey since leaving Villa

Luiz, 27, joined Juventus from Villa for £42.5 million in June 2024 as part of the club's efforts to address profit and sustainability concerns. However, his time in Serie A was short-lived, making just three starts before moving to Nottingham Forest on loan in August 2025. He has since featured in 14 matches for Forest this season.

Villa's midfield crisis

Unai Emery's side has faced a midfield shortage, with captain John McGinn sidelined for up to two months due to a knee injury. Boubacar Kamara is also expected to miss the remainder of the season with a similar issue, while Youri Tielemans was substituted off injured during Sunday's match at Newcastle.

Villa had previously missed out on Conor Gallagher, who opted to join Tottenham from Atlético Madrid for £35 million earlier this month.

Deal details and Villa's ambitions

The loan agreement for Luiz includes an option for Villa to purchase the Brazil international permanently. Luiz previously made 204 appearances for the club between 2019 and 2024, and sources indicate his preference was to return to Villa over other interested parties, including Chelsea.

Villa, currently third in the Premier League and four points behind leaders Arsenal, have already secured a place in the Europa League knockout stages with one group game remaining. The club is also close to finalizing the £18 million signing of striker Tammy Abraham from Beşiktaş, following his medical in the UK.

Abraham's transfer saga

Besiktas exercised an £11.2 million option to buy Abraham from Roma on Monday, paving the way for his potential move to Villa. The 28-year-old had been on loan at the Turkish club.
