Deadly blaze erupts at Goa nightclub
At least 25 people died when a fire tore through a crowded nightclub in Goa, India, late Saturday, officials confirmed. The blaze, triggered by a suspected gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen, trapped staff and patrons inside the popular venue.
Victims identified as staff and tourists
Goa's police chief, Alok Kumar, stated most victims were found near the kitchen, suggesting they were employees. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant revealed three deaths resulted from burns, while others suffocated. Among the deceased were three to four tourists, though their identities remain unconfirmed.
Six survivors are hospitalized in stable condition. Rescue teams transported the victims' bodies to Goa Medical College in Panaji for identification.
Witnesses describe chaotic scenes
Eyewitnesses recounted panic as flames engulfed the club, Birch by Romeo Lane, near a bustling beachfront. One witness outside the venue heard screams before realizing a fire had erupted. Another described melted furniture and charred debris scattered across the club's interior.
"The scenes were just horrific. People were trapped, and the fire spread so quickly."

Investigation launched into cause
Officials sealed the nightclub and deployed heavy security as forensic teams examined the wreckage. Chief Minister Sawant announced an inquiry, vowing strict legal action against any negligence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy "deeply saddening" in a social media post.
Firefighters noted the venue was at full capacity for a Bollywood-themed DJ event, typical for Goa's vibrant nightlife. A nearby chef expressed concern for missing colleagues, saying many workers in the area hail from across India and Nepal.
Goa's safety record under scrutiny
The coastal state, known for its beaches and resorts, attracts millions of tourists annually-5.5 million in the first half of 2025 alone, including 270,000 international visitors. However, India has faced repeated deadly fires at entertainment venues, including a May blaze in Hyderabad that killed 17 and a Kolkata hotel fire in April claiming 15 lives.
Last year, 24 people died in Gujarat when an amusement park arcade fire trapped visitors, with investigators citing poor safety standards as a contributing factor.
