Explosion at Hunan fireworks plant leaves 26 dead
An explosion at a fireworks factory in China's Hunan province has killed 26 people and injured 61 others, state media reported on Tuesday. Rescue operations at the Huasheng Fireworks plant in Liuyang city concluded after the blast on Monday afternoon.
Massive emergency response deployed
Over 1,500 emergency responders, along with search dogs, drones, and robots, were dispatched to the site. Seven individuals trapped under debris were rescued during the operation. Authorities evacuated everyone within a 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) radius of the plant due to safety concerns.
High-risk conditions and investigation underway
Two gunpowder warehouses within the factory posed significant risks during rescue efforts, state media said. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the blast and have taken "control measures" against the company's management.
President Xi Jinping ordered an all-out effort to search for missing individuals, treat the injured, and hold those responsible accountable. He also called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Environmental monitoring and resident accounts
Local authorities reported that air and water quality in the vicinity remained normal following the explosion. However, residents described severe damage to nearby homes.
"The glass windows in our homes were shattered, aluminum window frames were deformed, and even the stainless-steel doors were twisted out of shape," said a resident living about 1 kilometer from the factory.
Another resident told Beijing News she had left the village out of fear. Roads near the factory were blocked by debris, forcing villagers to take detours.
History of deadly fireworks accidents in China
Liuyang, known as the world's largest fireworks producer, has a history of fatal accidents at fireworks facilities. In February, an explosion at a fireworks store in Hubei province killed 12 people.
Rescuers implemented measures such as humidifying the area to prevent secondary explosions during the operation. The blast's impact shattered windows in a nearby residential building, according to a CCTV report.
Injuries and next steps
The injured, ranging in age from their 20s to 60s, suffered bone injuries from flying debris. Authorities continue to monitor environmental conditions and assess the long-term impact on the community.
