Cuba announces release of 51 prisoners
Havana will free 51 inmates in the coming days as a "goodwill" measure following discussions with the Vatican, the Cuban government confirmed. Officials did not clarify whether any of those released were political prisoners, but stated all had "served a substantial part of their sentences and maintained good conduct" while incarcerated.
Diplomatic talks with US underway amid fuel crisis
The prisoner release coincides with ongoing negotiations between Cuban and U.S. officials aimed at addressing long-standing tensions. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel revealed the talks during a national broadcast, emphasizing that no fuel shipments have reached the island in the past three months.
Díaz-Canel described the country's electrical grid as "increasingly unstable" due to dwindling diesel and fuel oil reserves. To counter the shortages, Cuba has ramped up domestic crude and natural gas production, as well as solar energy generation.
U.S. pressure exacerbates economic strain
U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Cuba since returning to office, threatening a "friendly takeover" of the island and warning of tariffs on nations supplying Cuba with oil. Trump declared Cuba was in "deep trouble" earlier this week, underscoring his administration's hardline stance.
The U.S. has intercepted multiple oil shipments bound for Cuba, further crippling the island's energy-dependent economy. Venezuela, which previously supplied 35,000 barrels of oil daily-covering roughly half of Cuba's needs-halted shipments after Washington's January raid and the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Historical context and diplomatic overtures
Relations between the U.S. and Cuba have been fraught since Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution overthrew a U.S.-backed government. Sanctions and trade embargoes imposed in the early 1960s remain in place, though recent talks mark a rare thaw.
Díaz-Canel framed the negotiations as "based on equality, respect for political systems, and sovereignty". U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose parents emigrated from Cuba, is involved in the discussions. Rubio previously stated that Cuba "must change dramatically" to improve living conditions for its citizens.
Prisoner releases part of broader pattern
Cuba's foreign ministry noted that since 2010, the government has pardoned 9,905 prisoners. Over the past three years, an additional 10,000 inmates were freed through other forms of clemency. The latest release aligns with the upcoming Holy Week in the Christian calendar, though officials stressed the decision was "sovereign."
The announcement follows a recent meeting between Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and Pope Leo at the Vatican.
