Unconventional wedding in Cardiff

Harmony Elmy and Seán Mauremootoo opted for a stress-free elopement in Cardiff, choosing two strangers from Reddit as their witnesses instead of family or friends.

Why Cardiff?

The couple, who reside in Norwich, traveled 261 miles to Cardiff-a city filled with shared memories from their time living in Worcester. They selected 1 August as their wedding date nearly a year in advance, giving their parents ample time to adjust to the idea. Both families were reportedly supportive of their decision.

A wedding with strangers

UK law requires at least two witnesses for a marriage. Rather than involving close friends or relatives, the couple turned to Reddit to find volunteers. Seán Mauremootoo, 32, said he was stunned by the overwhelming response. Ruairi and Sam, two strangers who responded to the post, ended up playing a key role in the ceremony.

"They were so accommodating, even asking what they should wear. I told them, 'As long as you're not in a wedding dress, you're fine.' It all just fell into place," Mauremootoo said.

A day of simple joys

Their wedding day was a celebration of their favorite activities. The couple began with fish and chips on Penarth Pier, followed by an escape room challenge and a carousel ride in Cardiff Bay. Their ceremony took place at the Temple of Peace, where they shared their first dance to *Waterloo Sunset* in a nearby park.

Despite their low-key plans, the day took an unexpected turn when strangers-drawn by a nearby Faithless concert-stopped to congratulate them and take photos. Mauremootoo described the moment as feeling "very glamorous" for what was meant to be a quiet affair.

Kindness from strangers

After their ceremony, the couple enjoyed a Mr Whippy ice cream, a ride on the big wheel, and another escape room session. To their surprise, the staff presented the bride with a large bouquet of flowers. The day concluded with dinner at CasaNova, where an older couple, Rob and Ruth, secretly paid their bill. The couple, celebrating their 50th anniversary, called the gesture "incredibly touching."

A perfect day

The newlyweds said they "wouldn't change a thing" about their wedding. Instead of a traditional cake, they shared a Welsh cake, and the weather was described as "perfect."

"Cardiff has always meant a lot to us, but this made it even more meaningful. I don't think we could ever replicate it or have done it better even if we tried," Mauremootoo said.

While their families joined via video call, the couple said the warmth and kindness from strangers made the day even more special.
