Hiker found dead in suspected mountain lion attack
Wildlife officials in Colorado report a hiker was likely killed by at least one mountain lion on Wednesday, marking the state's first fatal attack by the animal in 25 years.
Discovery and initial response
A group of hikers discovered the woman's body on a remote trail in Larimer County. Nearby, they spotted a mountain lion, which they drove away by throwing rocks. After confirming the victim had no pulse, the hikers alerted authorities, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spokesperson Kara Van Hoose.
Search and euthanasia of lions
CPW officers responding to the scene shot and wounded the lion, which fled. They later tracked and euthanized it. A second lion found in the area was also killed. Investigators are examining both animals for human DNA to determine if either was responsible for the attack.
If neither lion is linked to the incident, officials will resume the search for the attacker. Under CPW policy, any wildlife confirmed to have killed a human must be euthanized for public safety.
Victim and location details
The woman, who has not been publicly identified, is believed to have been hiking alone. Local authorities have notified her next of kin. The attack occurred on the Crosier Mountain Trail, a secluded area north of Denver near the Wyoming border and Rocky Mountain National Park, where cell service is often unreliable.
Search efforts and rarity of attacks
Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Estes Park police, and volunteer firefighters assisted in the search. A biologist conducting a deer survey by helicopter helped transport personnel, while houndsmen used tracking dogs to locate the lions.
Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are rare, with CPW recording only 28 incidents-fatal and non-fatal-since 1990. The animals, also known as pumas or cougars, are primarily found in 15 western U.S. states and are solitary hunters.
Next steps
Officials will continue analyzing evidence to confirm the cause of death and determine if additional lions need to be located. The investigation remains ongoing.
