Search suspended for missing fishermen off Massachusetts coast
The U.S. Coast Guard halted rescue operations on Saturday for six crew members still unaccounted for after the commercial fishing vessel Lily Jean sank approximately 25 miles east of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. One body was recovered during the search.
Timeline of the incident
Early Friday morning, authorities received an automated distress signal from the vessel's emergency beacon, which activates upon contact with water. The Lily Jean had been en route to Gloucester when it went down in the frigid Atlantic waters. No mayday call was transmitted prior to the sinking.
Search teams located a debris field near the distress signal's origin, along with an unoccupied life raft. One deceased individual was found in the water, though identities of both the recovered person and the missing crew members have not been disclosed.
Coast Guard statement
"Ending the search was an agonizing decision, but all feasible efforts have been exhausted," said Captain Jamie Frederick, commander of Coast Guard Sector Boston. "Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and the Gloucester community as they navigate this devastating loss."
Community and official reactions
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her grief in a Facebook post, stating, "I am heartbroken by this tragedy. My thoughts are with the crew's loved ones and all fishing families in Gloucester and Cape Ann during this unimaginable time."
State Senator Bruce Tarr, speaking to CBS, described the vessel's skipper as a respected figure in Gloucester's fishing community. "He was one of the most compassionate and skilled fishermen in the port, carrying on a generations-long family tradition," Tarr said.
Historical context
The Lily Jean was featured in Nor'easter Men, a three-hour History Channel documentary spotlighting New England's commercial draggers. Gloucester, the nation's oldest active fishing port, has long been central to the region's maritime heritage. The city gained wider recognition as the setting for The Perfect Storm, the 2000 film recounting the loss of the Andrea Gail and its crew in a 1991 storm.
Ongoing investigations
The Coast Guard has not yet released details about the cause of the sinking. Investigations into the incident are expected to continue, though no further search efforts are planned.
