Eriksen collapses in Denmark friendly, leaves field conscious
Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during a match against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday but was able to walk off the pitch unaided, the Danish Football Association confirmed. The game was abandoned in the 65th minute after the incident.
Medical update and pacemaker response
Denmark's national team doctor, Morten Boesen, stated that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained awareness quickly. The Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted in 2022 after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 appeared to function as intended.
"Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself," Boesen said. "He will now undergo further examinations to determine the cause of the incident."
Eriksen's career post-cardiac arrest
The 34-year-old returned to professional football in 2022 with Brentford, eight months after collapsing during Denmark's Euro 2020 match against Finland. He later played for Manchester United and joined Wolfsburg last summer, making 34 appearances in the 2025-26 Bundesliga season.
Eriksen was making his 151st international appearance for Denmark when he collapsed on Sunday. In a 2022 interview, he expressed no concerns about playing with the ICD, stating, "I don't see any risk... if anything happens, I am safe."
Emotional scenes on the pitch
Both Denmark and Ukraine players formed a protective ring around Eriksen as medical staff attended to him, mirroring the scene from his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. After he left the field in an ambulance, players from both teams applauded the fans before the match was abandoned.
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, a former Tottenham teammate, told Danish broadcaster TV2: "Everyone reacted super-fast and with respect. The most important thing is that Christian is doing well."
Team solidarity and next steps
Following the abandonment of the match, players and coaching staff from both teams stood arm in arm in a show of solidarity. Denmark coach Brian Riemer confirmed Eriksen had sent his regards to the squad and emphasized the importance of unity.
"The most important thing is that Christian is doing well. Now it's about us standing together," Riemer said.
