Seres unveils patent for retractable in-vehicle toilet
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Seres has secured a patent for a compact, sliding toilet designed to fit beneath a passenger seat, addressing the needs of travelers on extended road trips or during camping stays.
Design and functionality
The patent, filed on April 10 with China's intellectual property authorities, describes a toilet that deploys from under the seat either manually or via voice command. An integrated fan and exhaust system directs odors outside the vehicle, while waste is collected in a removable tank.
A rotating heating element is included to evaporate urine and dry solid waste, minimizing maintenance frequency. When not in use, the unit retracts seamlessly, preserving cabin space.
Market context and competition
Seres, headquartered in Chongqing, has yet to confirm whether the feature will enter production. The company specializes in electric SUVs under its own brand and the subsidiary Aito, primarily serving mainland China while expanding into Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
China's EV sector has grown fiercely competitive, with manufacturers introducing unconventional amenities-such as massage seats, karaoke systems, and built-in refrigerators-to differentiate their models. Despite these innovations, a price war has eroded profitability for many firms, prompting warnings from analysts about potential industry consolidation.
Historical precedent
While in-vehicle toilets remain uncommon in passenger cars, they have appeared in niche applications. In the 1950s, a custom Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith featured a toilet beneath the passenger seat alongside a built-in television, according to auction records from Sotheby's.
Industry outlook
Seres is among the few Chinese EV makers reporting profits, alongside industry leader BYD. However, the broader market faces pressure as dozens of brands vie for dominance, raising concerns about long-term sustainability.
