JD.com enters UK market with Joybuy platform

China's largest retailer by revenue, JD.com, has launched its Joybuy online shopping service in the UK, aiming to compete with established players like Amazon. The platform will operate from distribution hubs in Milton Keynes and Luton, offering next-day delivery to approximately 17 million households from day one.

Product range and expansion plans

Joybuy will stock a wide selection of goods, including electronics, home appliances, beauty products, homewares, and groceries. The company has described its UK launch as a long-term commitment, banking on competitive pricing, product variety, and convenience to attract customers.

Matthew Nobbs, managing director of Joybuy UK, expressed confidence in the company's growth prospects in Britain, stating the firm is poised to establish a strong foothold in the market.

European expansion and recent acquisitions

The UK launch is part of a broader push into Europe, with Joybuy simultaneously rolling out in five other markets: Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. JD.com's aggressive expansion follows its €2.2 billion (£1.9 billion) acquisition of Ceconomy, a Germany-based electronics retail group, in 2025.

Background: missed opportunities and industry shifts

The move into the UK comes after JD.com abandoned talks to acquire two major British retailers: Currys in 2024 and Argos in 2025. The company, listed on both US and Hong Kong stock exchanges, reported revenues of £30 billion last year.

Meanwhile, rival Amazon announced earlier this year that it would close its first UK fulfilment centre in Brogborough, Bedfordshire, signalling shifting dynamics in the country's e-commerce sector.

What's next for Joybuy?

JD.com has not disclosed specific hiring or investment figures for its UK operations but has emphasised its long-term strategy. Industry analysts will be watching closely to see how Joybuy's entry affects competition in the UK's crowded online retail space.
