China commissions advanced aircraft carrier Fujian with electromagnetic catapults

China's most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, officially entered service this week following a high-profile commissioning ceremony led by President Xi Jinping in southern Hainan province, state media reported.

The domestically built vessel, China's third aircraft carrier, features electromagnetic catapults-a technology previously deployed only by the United States-enabling faster aircraft launches and greater operational range, according to official reports.

Technological leap for China's navy

The Fujian's flat flight deck and electromagnetic launch system allow it to deploy three types of aircraft, including planes carrying heavier weaponry and fuel loads. This capability extends its strike range, surpassing China's earlier carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, both derived from Russian designs.

State media described the Fujian as a "major milestone" in China's naval expansion, underscoring its strategic significance amid Beijing's rapid military modernization under Xi's leadership.

Xi's role and ceremonial details

During Wednesday's ceremony, Xi inspected the carrier's deck and reviewed its performance metrics, state media said. Reports added that Xi had personally approved the adoption of electromagnetic catapult technology for the vessel.

Addressing sailors assembled on the flight deck, Xi heard chants of "Follow the party's command, fight to win, and uphold fine conduct!" as they saluted in unison, according to official accounts.

Strategic implications

The Fujian's commissioning reinforces China's position as the operator of the world's largest navy by ship count, intensifying pressure on the U.S. and its allies to counterbalance Beijing's growing maritime capabilities.

Analysts note that the carrier's advanced launch system could reshape regional power dynamics, though its full operational integration may take years.
