Four decades after Chernobyl: wildlife in the shadow of disaster
On a quiet night in 2016, evolutionary biologist Pablo Burraco ventured into the irradiated forests near the Chernobyl nuclear plant, the site of the world's worst nuclear accident. His headlamp caught a small, unusually dark tree frog calling for a mate-sparking questions about how radiation has reshaped life in the exclusion zone.
The accident and its aftermath
When Reactor No. 4 exploded on April 26, 1986, radioactive material spread across Europe, reaching as far as the UK and North Africa. The immediate area around the plant in northern Ukraine bore the brunt of the contamination. A 60-kilometer exclusion zone was established, forcing human evacuation-but wildlife remained.
Forty years later, the zone teems with life, though not unchanged. Researchers have documented twisted trees, tumor-ridden swallows, and a black fungus thriving inside the reactor's ruins. Some species appear to have adapted, but the science remains contentious.
Dark frogs and disputed theories
Burraco's team studied over 250 tree frogs, finding those inside the exclusion zone were darker on average than those outside. Their hypothesis? Higher melanin levels might shield frogs from radiation, offering a survival advantage. Yet, critics like biologist Timothy Mousseau argue the data is inconclusive, noting melanin levels don't correlate with current radiation exposure.
"The sampling wasn't comprehensive enough to draw firm conclusions," Mousseau said, emphasizing that radiation levels have shifted since 1986.

Radiobiologist Carmel Mothersill called the study methodologically sound but cautioned against overinterpretation. The debate reflects broader uncertainties: Are observed changes caused by radiation, other pollutants like heavy metals, or entirely different factors?
Genetic mysteries and ecological shifts
Bank voles in the zone show higher mitochondrial genetic diversity, possibly due to radiation-induced mutations. Yet, similar patterns in feral dogs lack clear evidence linking them to radiation. Meanwhile, pine trees-highly sensitive to radiation-died en masse, replaced by birch forests, altering the ecosystem entirely.
Mothersill highlights the challenge of distinguishing between immediate post-accident mutations and those passed to offspring. A 2006 study found chromosomal aberrations in voles persisted across generations, even in uncontaminated labs.
Nature's unexpected rebound
The absence of humans has allowed wildlife to flourish. Wolves, bears, and bison now roam freely, with wolf populations estimated at seven times higher than in nearby reserves. Eurasian lynx and brown bears-absent for over a century-have returned. Abandoned pets have also thrived, with guards feeding the descendants of dogs left behind in 1986.
Yet not all species benefit. Barn swallows face dual pressures from residual radiation and climate change, threatening their survival as temperatures rise.
Adaptation or coincidence?
The question of whether wildlife has evolved to tolerate radiation remains hotly debated. Some soybeans in the zone show resistance to radioactivity and heavy metals, while bank voles exhibit greater DNA damage resistance. A black fungus inside the reactor, rich in melanin, appears to thrive in high-radiation environments.
"Melanin seems to provide some resistance to ionizing radiation," Mousseau noted, though he dismissed claims the fungus harnesses radiation for growth.

Geographer Jonathon Turnbull warns against oversimplifying Chernobyl's ecological story. "Nature isn't just thriving or dying-it's a complex web of subtle responses," he said. The disaster's legacy extends beyond the zone, with traces of radionuclides found in Polish mushrooms, American blueberries, and Greek firewood.

Four decades on, Chernobyl's wildlife continues to challenge scientists. Are the changes adaptation, coincidence, or a mix of both? The answers remain elusive, but the exclusion zone endures as a living laboratory-a testament to nature's resilience amid human catastrophe.
