Chelsea suffer heavy defeat as Everton climb above them

Chelsea's struggles intensified on Saturday after a 3-0 loss to Everton, extending their winless streak to four matches across all competitions. The defeat leaves the London club sixth in the Premier League, just one point ahead of seventh-placed Everton, with seven games remaining in the season.

Rosenior under fire as players criticize lack of direction

Head coach Liam Rosenior faces mounting pressure following back-to-back Premier League losses, compounded by an 8-2 aggregate exit to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Vice-captain Enzo Fernández publicly questioned the club's direction, stating Chelsea had lost "identity, structure and direction" since former manager Enzo Maresca's departure in January.

Fernández, who nearly scored against Everton, later embraced Rosenior post-match, but his comments underscored the growing unrest within the squad.

Tactical flaws and defensive errors exposed

Everton dominated proceedings at Hill Dickinson Stadium, exploiting Chelsea's defensive frailties and lack of midfield control. The visitors were outrun and outplayed, with goalkeeper Robert Sánchez at fault for Beto's opener after a handling error. Chelsea have now conceded the first goal in four consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since November 2023.

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live the team appeared "tactically open" and questioned whether players were fully committed to Rosenior's system. "You need to find out why that's happened," Nevin said. "That can't be allowed to happen in the Premier League."

Rotation and fatigue blamed for inconsistent performances

Rosenior has faced criticism for his extensive squad rotation, with Chelsea making 99 changes in the Premier League this season-the most of any club. The 41-year-old admitted he lacks a clear first-choice goalkeeper, with Sánchez and Filip Jorgensen sharing duties. Sánchez's form has dipped, while defenders like Wesley Fofana have also come under scrutiny.

"What I need to do better is make better decisions in terms of team selections, how we freshen up the team and rotate to ensure we are competitive," Rosenior told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Despite the setbacks, Rosenior insisted the club's position was not as dire as perceived, pointing to Chelsea's fourth-place form table ranking since his appointment. Only Manchester United, Arsenal, and Manchester City have collected more points in that period.

Fan protests loom as Champions League hopes fade

Chelsea's failure to score in three consecutive matches-despite 52 shots (16 on target)-has raised concerns about their attacking efficiency. The club's struggles have fueled fan discontent, with some supporters singing anti-ownership chants and leaving the stadium early during the Everton match. Rosenior attempted to engage with remaining fans post-game, but frustration is palpable.

A planned protest march is scheduled before Chelsea's home match against Manchester United on April 18, with fans from Strasbourg-also owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-expected to join.

Champions League qualification critical for Chelsea's future

Missing out on Europe's premier competition could have severe repercussions for Chelsea, both financially and in the transfer market. The club risks losing out on top targets, with striker Liam Delap reportedly choosing Stamford Bridge over Manchester United due to Champions League football.

Revenue from the tournament far exceeds that of the Europa League or Conference League, a crucial factor for Chelsea, who still lack a long-term front-of-shirt sponsor and play in a stadium smaller than those of many rivals. Former manager Maresca had prioritized top-four qualification, and Rosenior is now tasked with delivering on that goal.

"Liam knows he will get judged on results. He started really well, they've hit a bad run, but he needs to figure out a way to get out of it."

With the international break offering a respite, Rosenior must regroup quickly to salvage Chelsea's season and avoid a damaging collapse in the race for European football.
