Controversial moment sparks refereeing debate

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has accused match officials of failing to enforce standards after Arsenal's Katie McCabe escaped punishment for pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair during their UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final second leg.

The incident

With Chelsea trailing 3-2 on aggregate in stoppage time, McCabe appeared to grab Thompson's hair as the U.S. winger broke forward. Referee Frida Mia Klarlund took no action, and the video assistant referee (VAR) did not intervene. Thompson was visibly distressed, while McCabe later claimed she had been reaching for the player's shirt.

Bompastor's reaction

Bompastor, furious at the decision, was shown a yellow card for protesting before being sent off for continued dissent. She refused to leave the touchline as Arsenal held on to advance to the semi-finals. In a post-match interview with BBC Two, the French manager presented a replay on her phone to argue the case.

"For me, it is clearly a red card for the Arsenal player. She's pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair. If the VAR is not able to check that situation, I don't know why we have the VAR."

Bompastor added that Thompson was left "crying and emotional" after the match, calling the incident unacceptable in professional football.

McCabe's response

Shortly after the final whistle, McCabe posted on Instagram to clarify her actions: "I just want to clarify that I was genuinely reaching for the shirt. I wouldn't ever want to pull someone's hair. Full respect to Thompson."

Arsenal manager Renee Slegers suggested the contact was unintentional, noting McCabe had apologized to Thompson after both players went to ground.

Reactions from the football community

Former England captain Steph Houghton described the incident as "really, really cynical," while Brighton midfielder Fran Kirby speculated that McCabe had likely intended to grab Thompson's shirt rather than her hair.

Hair-pulling has led to red cards in men's football, including recent dismissals of Everton's Michael Keane (Premier League, January 2026) and Southampton's Jack Stephens (December 2024). Paris St-Germain's João Neves was also sent off for a similar offense during the 2025 Club World Cup final.

Broader context

The controversy follows Bompastor's criticism of officiating after Chelsea had two goals disallowed in the first leg at Emirates Stadium. She argued that inconsistent refereeing undermines the women's game and called for greater respect for players' efforts.

"We are speaking too much about the referees... It has a big impact on players. I'm really proud of my players; they don't deserve that level of refereeing again."
