Final round to decide Champions League knockout fate

The last matchday of the Champions League league phase kicks off Wednesday with 30 teams still in contention for knockout-stage berths, including six English clubs fighting for top-eight finishes.

English clubs lead crowded top-eight race

Arsenal, already through to the last 16, are the only English side guaranteed safe passage. The Gunners lead the table after seven straight wins and need just a draw at home against Kairat Almaty to secure first place. Opta analysts give Arsenal a 31% chance of winning the tournament, the highest of any team.

Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle United, and Chelsea currently occupy the remaining top-eight spots, which would grant them direct entry to the last 16. Manchester City, however, sit just outside in ninth, tied on 13 points with seven other teams but trailing on goal difference.

All 18 matches begin at 20:00 GMT, marking the first time six clubs from one country could reach the knockout stages.

Key matchups and seeding implications

The top two finishers will face play-off winners in the last 16 but gain home advantage in the second leg of every round until the final, scheduled for Budapest. Bayern Munich can secure second place with a draw at PSV Eindhoven.

Teams finishing ninth to 24th enter play-offs on February 17-18 and 24-25, with eight advancing to join the automatic qualifiers.

Clubs with straightforward paths

Real Madrid (15 points) and Liverpool (15) can secure top-eight spots with wins. Liverpool host Qarabag, while Real Madrid travel to Benfica, managed by former Real coach José Mourinho. Tottenham, on 14 points, face already-eliminated Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany.

"It's all down to us again. Let's make sure we're in the top eight," said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after last week's victory in Marseille.

Tight battles for remaining spots

Newcastle, Chelsea, and Manchester City are among eight teams on 13 points, with goal difference likely to decide their fate. Chelsea face former manager Antonio Conte's Napoli, while Manchester City host Galatasaray. Newcastle face a tough trip to Paris Saint-Germain.

Only two matches feature teams both vying for top-eight spots: Newcastle at PSG and Borussia Dortmund against Inter Milan.

Play-off race equally congested

Teams down to 32nd place still have a chance to finish in the top 24 and enter the play-offs. Only four sides-Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, Villarreal, and Kairat-have been eliminated.

Marseille (19th) and Ajax (32nd) are separated by just three points, illustrating the narrow margins across the table.

Tie-breaker rules in focus

With so many teams level on points, tie-breakers will be crucial. The first criteria are goal difference and goals scored. If still tied, away goals and away wins come into play. Further tie-breakers include the collective strength of opponents faced, disciplinary records, and UEFA club coefficients.

For example, Manchester City and Sporting CP both have 13 points and identical goal differences, but City lead on away goals (7 to 3).
