Former Scotland striker Dixie Deans passes away aged 79

Celtic and Motherwell icon John 'Dixie' Deans, renowned for his prolific scoring record in the 1960s and 1970s, has died, the clubs confirmed on Tuesday. Deans earned two Scotland caps and secured six major trophies during his time with Celtic.

Early career and rise to prominence

Deans began his journey with Neilston Juniors, where his goal-scoring exploits-including 60 in a single season-earned him the nickname 'Dixie', inspired by the legendary Everton and England forward Dixie Dean. His professional career took off in 1965 when he joined Motherwell, netting 89 goals in 198 appearances and helping the club win the Second Division title in the 1968-69 season.

Despite a reputation for disciplinary issues, including multiple red cards at Fir Park, Deans caught the attention of Celtic manager Jock Stein, who signed him in 1971 following a surprising 4-1 League Cup final loss to Partick Thistle.

Glory years at Celtic

At Celtic, Deans transformed into a disciplined yet lethal forward, forming a formidable partnership with Kenny Dalglish. His most memorable performances came in cup finals, where he scored hat-tricks in both the 1972 Scottish Cup final and the 1974 League Cup final, both against Hibernian. These victories cemented his legacy as one of the club's greatest strikers.

However, his career also included heartbreak. Deans missed a decisive penalty in Celtic's 1972 European Cup semi-final shootout against Inter Milan, a moment that remained a rare blemish on an otherwise stellar record. In total, he scored 124 goals in 184 appearances for the Hoops before departing for Luton Town in 1976.

Later career and retirement

After leaving Celtic, Deans played for Adelaide United, Carlisle United, and Partick Thistle before retiring in 1980. His impact on Scottish football endured long after his playing days, with fans and peers remembering him as one of the most clinical finishers of his era.

Tributes pour in

"Deans will be remembered fondly for his exquisite goal-scoring form at Fir Park. He passes away aged 79 years old, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace, Dixie."

Motherwell FC statement

"This is extremely sad news and I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Dixie's family and friends. Dixie was a great Celt and one of the finest goal scorers ever to have played for the club. I was fortunate enough to have watched him play throughout his career, and he played his part in the successes we enjoyed in the 1970s, not least in those unforgettable hat-tricks he scored against Hibs in two cup finals at Hampden."

Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell

Lawwell added that Deans' passion for Celtic and the affection fans held for him were evident in every interaction, describing their bond as a testament to his enduring legacy.
