Fernandes claims FWA Footballer of the Year
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Football Writers' Association's (FWA) men's Footballer of the Year for the 2025-26 season. The Portuguese midfielder secured 45% of the votes from over 900 FWA members, finishing ahead of Arsenal's Declan Rice and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.
Record-breaking season
Fernandes has been instrumental in United's resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick, contributing eight goals and 19 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions this season. He is one assist shy of becoming the first player to reach 20 assists in a single Premier League campaign.
His consistent performances have helped United secure a third-place finish in the Premier League, ensuring Champions League football next season-their first return to Europe's elite competition since 2021.
From uncertainty to leadership
Fernandes' future at Old Trafford had been in doubt last summer after Al-Hilal's lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League. The 31-year-old rejected the move and dismissed further interest from European clubs, reaffirming his commitment to United. His contract, set to expire in 2027 with an option for an additional year, is now expected to be renegotiated given his standout season.
"I won't discuss my future with anyone until after the World Cup," Fernandes stated in October, emphasizing his focus on the season ahead.

United's push for the award was strategic, with the club promoting Fernandes through media engagements. However, his on-field impact has been undeniable. Since returning from injury in a match against Burnley, Fernandes has directly contributed to a goal or assist in 13 of his last 16 appearances, including a pivotal role in Sunday's victory over Liverpool.
His leadership has been crucial in a season where United defied expectations. After interim manager Ruben Amorim's departure in January, technical director Jason Wilcox set Champions League qualification as the target-a goal many deemed unrealistic.
