Suspect arrested in shooting of New York Jets cornerback
A 20-year-old Bronx resident has been charged with attempted murder after NFL player Kris Boyd was shot outside a Manhattan restaurant last month, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
Incident details
Frederick Green allegedly opened fire on Boyd during a confrontation with a group of strangers outside a Midtown restaurant at approximately 02:00 local time on 16 November (21:00 GMT). Police described the altercation as unprovoked.
Boyd, 29, sustained two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. One bullet struck his lung and lodged in his pulmonary artery, placing him in critical condition. He was hospitalized before being discharged in stable condition.
Arrest and charges
Green was taken into custody on Monday in Buffalo, roughly 580 km (360 miles) from New York City, where he was found hiding in his girlfriend's apartment. The U.S. Marshals Service reported that Green had altered his appearance to evade detection.
During the arrest, officers observed Green peering out of an apartment window before retreating inside. The standoff concluded when he surrendered with his hands raised. He now faces charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Surveillance footage and investigation
Police allege that surveillance video captured Green fleeing the scene in a vehicle driven by an accomplice. The footage reportedly shows the moments following the shooting, including Green's escape.
Authorities provided an account of the incident to CBS News, stating that Boyd and three companions-two fellow Jets players and a friend-were taunted by a group of strangers before the confrontation escalated into violence.
Boyd's recovery and career
Boyd, a cornerback, recently visited his teammates at the Jets' practice facility, according to ESPN. He had been placed on injured reserve in August after suffering a shoulder injury during a team practice.
Prior to joining the Jets this year, Boyd spent two seasons with the Houston Texans, one with the Arizona Cardinals, and four with the Minnesota Vikings.
Next steps
Green is expected to appear in court in the coming days as the legal process unfolds. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, with authorities reviewing additional evidence and witness statements.
